Police investigate car wrecks, 2 shot in midtown

ATLANTA — Atlanta police are investigating a string of car wrecks in the area of Ponce De Leon Avenue, Spring Street and North Avenue.

Police tell Channel 2's Wendy Corona that a red SUV came out of the Varsity restaurant parking lot onto Spring Street and struck a car, which was then pushed into a white SUV.

The white SUV ended up on its side at the intersection of Spring Street and Ponce De LeonAvenue.

The red SUV then kept going, speeding down Spring Street and struck four other vehicles in its attempt to flee, causing another wreck.

The people inside the red SUV then ran. Investigator said they set up a perimeter to look for the suspects and were able to locate them, arresting three people.

Police arrested two men and a woman. Officers said one of the men had a gunshot wound to his hand. Another man was found at the scene with a gun shot wound to the chest. He was taken to the hospital and was listed in critical condition at last check. Channel 2 Action News obtained mugshots of one of the men and the woman facing charges. They have been identified as Laquan Johnson and Brandi Jackson.

Officers are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting. So far, no one has been charged in the crash.

Investigators said eight people including a three and four-year-old were injured in the wrecks. Seven of those people were taken to the hospital to be checked out.
