Police: Dad brought newborn along while shoplifting at mall

CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. — A father is accused of shoplifting with his 7-week old baby boy in Clayton County.

Morrow police say Talat Muwwakkil, 27, took off running with the newborn when security spotted him at Southlake Mall.

Police say Muwwakkil went into Macy's and stole an Izod shirt and a pair of Levi’s shorts. Police say he put the shorts inside his newborn's carrier.

A loss prevention specialist noticed what was going on, and that’s when the father ran from the store.

"He was holding the child as he was running," said Morrow Police Chief James Callaway.

They spotted Muwwakkil running across Mount Zion Road and arrested him.

“There was no injury at all to the 7-week-old child,” said Callaway.

The baby has since been released to the child’s mother.

The case is being referred to the state Department of Children and Family Services.
