Cops: Purse-snatching pair arrested after police chase

NEWTON COUNTY, Ga. — Covington police say a couple attempted to steal a purse, dragged a woman 300 feet and eventually led officers on a 40-mile police chase.

Investigators told Channel 2's Erica Byfield the incident began in a Covington Walmart at about 12:45 Wednesday.

Police said the victim was unloading items she bought at the store on 10300 Industrial Blvd. when someone tried to steal her purse. The victim tried to grab it back, and that is when she was dragged the distance of three football fields though the parking lot, police said.

Police then chased the suspects' car from northeast Covington into downtown Atlanta.

The chase ended with a crash involving three cars at Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and Broad Street.

Police pinned the suspects' car shortly afterward and arrested a man and woman inside.

The case is still under investigation.
