Police: 2 Cobb Co. deputies hit by car near jail

COBB COUNTY, Ga. — Two Cobb County deputies were struck by a car outside the Cobb County Jail.

Cobb County police said the deputies were hit alongside County Services Parkway Friday afternoon, just a few feet from the door of the jail.

Investigators identified the driver as 32-year-old Candida Summerlin.

They told Channel 2's Ross Cavitt that deputies spoke to Summerlin about loud music coming from her car as she waited in a jail parking lot. Summerlin immediately drove off and struck one deputy and then another before losing control of her car, deputies said.

"I looked an glanced to the left and I saw the car coming by crazy. They tried to get her to calm down but she just hit the gas and tried to hit them and then she sped off and hit the sign then the curb," witness Ernie Johnson told Cavitt.

One of the deputies is being treated for injuries that could include a broken leg, the other deputy suffered scrapes and bruises.

Summerlin had just been released from the jail a few days ago after being charged with battery and obstruction of an officer.

The entrance of the jail has been closed for most of the afternoon. Summerlin is back in the Cobb County Jail, Cavitt reported.
