Ice, snow melt as temperatures rise above freezing

ATLANTA — Temperatures are on the rise but there is still snow on the ground throughout parts of metro Atlanta and north Georgia.

Road temperatures stayed below freezing overnight and into Monday morning.

The threat for black ice ended at about 9 a.m.

Temperatures will warm into the low-mid 50s Monday and with lots of sunshine, there will be melting and drying on area roads.

"Overnight lows will not drop below freezing except for the mountains, so I expect the roads will be in good shape in metro Atlanta tomorrow morning," Severe Weather Team 2 meteorologist Brad Nitz said.

Everywhere except the north Georgia mountains will have temperatures above freezing Tuesday, Nitz said.

A cold front will come through dry Tuesday but bring colder air again and wind gusts up to 30 mph, Nitz said.

“Those wind gusts could bring down trees that are cracked or damaged form this weekend’s snow storm, or possibly trees that are still weighted with heavy snow,” he said.

The rest of the week is shaping up to be sunny and cool.

“Our next rain chance will be around Sunday to Monday,” Nitz said.

He said there is currently a 30 percent chance for rain Sunday.
