Peachtree City investigates red-dye spill at creek

FAYETTE COUNTY, Ga. — The discoloration of a creek behind a Peachtree City Public Works yard has residents concerned.

The city wants the public to know the color was caused by nontoxic red concrete dye.

City officials say one of their contractors working on stormwater pipes hosed out a drum that contained a concrete coloring.

Tuesday night, that dye went into a detention pond and then the bright orange runoff went everywhere.

A city spokesperson insists the dye is not toxic, won't hurt the ecology and did not wash into Flat Creek or Lake Peachtree.

Officials say the contractor Utility Asset Management of Reynolds, Georgia is cleaning up and moving the orange soil and pumping out the orange water.

The Georgia Environmental Protection Division is supervising the cleanup.
