PE teacher hit by SUV dies

COBB COUNTY, Ga.,None - A Cobb County PE teacher who was hit by an SUV while jogging died Friday.

The Thursday crash sent shockwaves through the Kennesaw Charter Science and Math Academy, where the victim, Jay Ingram, worked. People at the school said he was a beloved teacher.

“You can tell he cares about what he's doing. He just gives you that warm feeling,” parent Orville James told Channel 2’s Ross Cavitt.

Police said Ingram was jogging on North Booth Road during the foggy pre-dawn hours Thursday when a car driven by a 50-year-old Doraville man ran into him. Police said he was jogging with the flow of traffic at the time.

According to state law, pedestrians must use the sidewalk if available or jog on the side against the flow of traffic. So far, no charges have been filed against the driver.

Cavitt went to Kennestone Hospital where Ingram’s family and friends gathered for a vigil Friday. Back at the school, students and parents stayed informed through social media. But their worst fears were realized later in the day.

“He’s just a wonderful person overall,” James said.
