GBI: Man shot multiple times trying to pull gun on officer

AUBURN, Ga. — A man is in serious condition after investigators say he was shot by a police officer after lying to the officer and trying to pull a gun on him.

Auburn police got a 911 call concerning a domestic incident at a home on Wages Road just after 4 p.m. Sunday.

When officers arrived at the home, a woman inside said Stephen Frank Nichols had run away into a wooded area behind the house.

One of the officers went looking for the 46-year-old and found him a short time later, but Nichols tried telling the officer he was someone else, according to investigators.

The investigator said Nichols then tried pulling a gun on him and that’s when the officer opened fire.

Police said Nichols was shot multiple times. He was taken to Gwinnett Medical Center, where he remains in serious condition.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been called in to investigate the shooting. Auburn police said the results of the investigation will be turned over to the Barrow County District Attorney’s Office.

Channel 2's Liz Artz spoke with GBI investigators, who said Nichols is a convicted felon and faces serious charges.

The GBI signed warrants for the Nichols arrest, but they likely won't be served until a later date.

One of those warrants is aggravated assault of a police officer and possession of a firearm as a convicted felon, according to police.

No officers were injured during the shootout.
