Occupy Atlanta on the move

ATLANTA,None — Occupy Atlanta protesters found a new home to set up camp Thursday night. They spent the night behind the Martin Luther King Jr. visitor center in northeast Atlanta but are now on the move.

“Why there? Because we are there in the shadow of the Civil Rights Movement,” demonstrator Brittany Gondolfi said.

U.S. park rangers who protect the national historic site let the group stay temporarily. The previous morning, protesters were kicked out of Woodruff Park, where they had been camped out for weeks. There were more than 50 arrests in the evacuation. But demonstrators said it’s a different story this time around.

“They seem OK with us being here, much different than what we were dealing with at Woodruff,” Matt Magnuson said. “They came down here to check on us. That makes us feel good.”

The protesters made good on a promise to pack up and leave Friday morning, “out of respect for this place and out of respect for the comprise we made with authorities,” Magnuson said.

Hours later, some were back at Woodruff Park and others planned to join them at 6 p.m. They said they will be following the rules and leaving before closing time. Gondolfi said they will be on the move from now on, staying in one spot for no more than a night or so.

“This occupation is not tied with one spot or park. It's tied to one heartbeat,” she said.
