Mom accused of 'street racing' says she was headed to daughter's school

ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Alpharetta police say a Roswell mother was street racing another car on a busy highway. She tells Channel 2 that she was merely speeding to get to her daughter’s school.

Police say dash cam video shows two cars passing each other and weaving in and out of traffic on Ga. 400 Thursday afternoon.

"One of our officers was traveling southbound on Ga. 400 when he noticed two vehicles, a Nissan Altima and a Mustang, traveling at a very high rate of speed," Officer Jason Muenzer told Channel 2's Mike Petchenik. "(They were) going in and out of traffic, really putting people at harm's way."

At one point, the driver of the Ford Mustang slowed down and pulled off to the side, but police say Joy Ojehomon kept going, and at very fast speeds.

“Our officer went after the vehicle, must have reached 110 mph and was still unable to get caught up to these vehicles,” Muenzer said.

When the officer pulled Ojehomon over in Roswell, she denied racing and told police she was in a hurry to drop off a letter to her school, police said.

She told Petchenik it was a permission slip for an event that she had to turn in Thursday, or her daughter wouldn’t have been allowed to go.

She also told him she saw the speeding Mustang and got behind it so she could drive in its path, but maintains she was never racing the other car.

“It makes no difference,” Muenzer said. “You got to deliver a paper, you’ve got to get there safely.”

Police charged Ojehomon with racing, reckless driving and speeding.
