Intoxicated dad drove 100 mph with 3 kids in car, police say

ROSWELL, Ga. — A Roswell father is facing charges after police say he was speeding down Georgia State Route 400 while drunk with three unrestrained children in his van.

Alpharetta police have charged Basilio Pierzon-Rodriguez with DUI, reckless driving and three counts of DUI child endangerment stemming from the May 28 incident near Haynes Bridge Road and Route 400.

“Occasionally we see something that’s beyond the pale,” said Alpharetta Department of Public Safety spokesman George Gordon. “We had an intoxicated driver who was speeding in excess of 100 mph on Ga. 400.”

Gordon told Channel 2's Mike Petchenik when an officer pulled over the 28-year-old, he found three children -- ages 7, 4 and 3 -- unrestrained in the back seat.

“At 100 mph, he could have had a vehicle change lanes in front of him. We have the occasional deer in the roadway. Something, a pothole,” he said. “Whatever it could be, had he lost control, we possibly could have had multiple fatalities.”

Petchenik visited an apartment address listed on the police report, but nobody answered the door.

A neighbor, who asked not to be identified, told Petchenik she was surprised a parent would do something like that.

“That’s ridiculous,” she said. “It’s neglect. He should be charged with a whole bunch of stuff.”

Police told Petchenik a relative came to pick up the children after Pierzon-Rodriguez was taken to jail.
