Gas prices fall below $2

MILTON, Gal. — Pockets of the metro are seeing gas prices below $2 a gallon for the first time since last spring.

The area near MacFarland Parkway and Atlanta Highway in Forsyth County has six gas stations with prices below $2.

According to GasBuddy.com, the case is the same in Doraville, Duluth and Norcross.

Drivers told Channel 2 consumer investigator Jim Strickland they are loving the low prices.

Strickland talked to David Bryant, who was filling the gas tank on his fishing boat Friday afternoon.

“How much does this thing take?” Strickland asked Bryant.

"Fifty-six gallons,” Bryant said.

“Does it make a difference when the gas is less than $2?” Strickland asked.

“Absolutely,” Bryant said.

Strickland found at least six gas stations with prices less than $2 a gallon in the Milton/Alpharetta area.

“I think in the short term gas prices below $2 probably will spread,” oil analyst Chris Edmonds said.

Edmonds said demand is slowing and supplies are booming. The government reports at one point last month, gas stocks hit a record 259 million barrels.

With summer driving soon upon us, bringing increasing demand, and with refineries due for maintenance work, the prices below $2 likely won't last.

“I would be very surprised if gasoline stays below $2 once we get through Easter and certainly into Memorial Day,” Edmonds told Strickland.

Edmonds said $2.25 to $2.50 is the likely price range for summer travel.
