Father charged with severely injuring 8-week-old son

ALPHARETTA, Ga. — An Alpharetta father is facing charges after police say he caused severe injuries to his 8-week-old son.

Police told Channel 2's Mike Petchenik that the infant's parents rushed the child to the hospital in June after he was throwing up, and doctors at North Fulton Hospital immediately transferred the child to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite.

“The infant, it was determined, had bleeding on the brain, had two hemorrhages, two fractures and we learned subsequently to the investigation the infant went into two seizures while being treated at Scottish Rite,” said George Gordon, Alpharetta Police Department spokesman.

Gordon told Petchenik the boy’s father, Sultan Powe, told police he had accidentally dropped his son 2 feet while giving him a bath, but a doctor ruled his injuries weren’t consistent with a fall. %

“He said the infant had to be slammed,” Gordon said. “It’s a clear case, we believe, of child abuse. Horrific child abuse at that.”

Police have charged Powe with first degree child cruelty. He’s currently in the Fulton County Jail without a bond.

Powe’s mother told Petchenik she doesn’t believe her son would have intentionally hurt the child.

She said police should thoroughly investigate everyone who had contact with the child before he was hospitalized.

The child’s mother told Petchenik the boy is doing much better. She said she also doesn’t believe Powe hurt the child, but said she wasn’t there at the time the injury occurred.
