Driver impaled by flying debris on Ga. 400

NORTH FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — A woman is recovering after police say a sharp object penetrated her windshield and impaled her in the neck.

The incident happened Saturday on Ga. 400 near Roberts Drive and Northridge Road.

"A piece of debris, similar to a railroad tie, went through her windshield and impaled in her neck,” said Sandy Springs Police Sgt. Forrest Bohannon. %

Bohannon said the woman was able to pull over and call for help. She was taken to North Fulton Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Bohannon told Channel 2’s Mike Petchenik.

“We don't know if it fell off a vehicle or if it was already in the roadway and was kicked up by a vehicle running it over,” she said.

Bohannon said there was no evidence someone threw the object at the woman’s car.

Petchenik’s attempts to reach the woman were unsuccessful, but someone at her place of employment said she was doing okay and recovering.

Drivers told Petchenik the freak accident gave them pause.

"I'm always worried about something flying from underneath tires and flying off the back of vehicles,” said Renna Mosteller. “Stuff like that, nobody ever expects that."
