Crews working to repair massive sinkhole on Roswell Road

NORTH FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — All lanes of Roswell Road are reopened after a sinkhole closed it for more than 48 hours.

Crews worked in rainy and windy conditions Thursday night into Friday morning to repair a section of the busy road damaged by a water main rupture Wednesday.

Alex Dinsmore told Channel 2’s Mike Petchenik he was working at a nearby Goodyear store when he heard a loud bang.

“I thought a gun had gone off, and I went outside and could see water spewing from the middle of the road,” he said.

Soon, a trickle turned into a torrent, taking part of a southbound lane out with it and forcing the Georgia Department of Transportation to shut down one southbound lane.

“The road was cracked and it was coming out from the middle, and then the water main broke and started flooding,” Dinsmore said. “I was standing 15 feet from it and I saw it cave in on itself.”

Atlanta Watershed spokeswoman Cameo Garrett told Petchenik the water main was 12 inches and had been installed in 1965. She said the main had a life expectancy of 50 years. The main rupture affected water service overnight, but Garrett said water was turned back on about 3 a.m. Thursday.

The manager at the tire store where Dinsmore works told Petchenik he expected to lose about half his normal business Friday because of the traffic tie-up.

“I’m just hoping they get this done quickly because traffic is always a nightmare here,” Dinsmore said.
