Police: Hit-and-run driver caused crash, massive jam on I-285

NORTH FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — Police arrested a hit-and-run driver who they say caused traffic chaos during the morning rush hour on Interstate 285 west in Sandy Springs.

Channel 2 Action News This Morning had live coverage of the traffic crash, which blocked lanes for hours Friday along the top end perimeter.

Sandy Springs police told Channel 2’s Steve Gehlbach that a driver fell asleep and hit a box truck, causing it to swerve and hit the median near Roswell Road.

"He struck the median wall, it caused debris to go into the 285 eastbound lanes, so we had to close all the lanes of travel on 285 eastbound as well as the lanes on 285 westbound where the accident occurred,” said Sandy Springs Police Capt. Mike Lindstrom.%

The driver, Tye Trimble, ran from the crash scene and ended up behind someone’s home on Kayron Drive, police said.

A neighbor said on Twitter that Trimble was asleep in the backyard and a family dog sniffed him out and started to bark.

When asked why he ran, Sandy Springs police say the 42-year-old said he was scared because he has no license.

Police are still investigating if he was drunk or impaired at the time of the crash.

Trimble faces a list of five charges connected to the hit-and-run.
