Leaking truck spills trail of red dye through 2 counties

NEWTON COUNTY, Ga. — A truck hauling red dye leaked for miles and miles through two local counties, splashing on cars along the way.

Channel 2's Liz Artz drove 20 miles on Highway 11 into Jasper County Tuesday and saw dozens of cars splashed with the paint. Those people are now hoping the trucking company will do something about it.

Matt Barnes, the regional manager for Taylor Pallets of Georgia told Artz the company is not blowing anyone off. The recycling business plans to pay drivers for all expenses accrued to remove the color. He said right now they're trying to determine if it's an insurance matter or if the company will pay out of pocket.

Barnes said the dye is non-toxic and water based.

The Jasper County Sheriff's Office posted the incident to Facebook, informing all residents about the problem and to check their vehicles.

Barnes says his truck driver was transporting the dye between their two businesses when the drum shifted, poking a hole and causing the dye to leak. He said they won’t transfer dye moving forward.

The sheriff's office is asking anyone who may have red dye on their car to give them a call they'll add you to the incident report.
