CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. - Neighbors are in shock after someone shot three people, killing one man in a popular cut-through in Rex.
Channel 2's Tom Jones talked to people who say they spoke with the victims right before the shooting.
Courtney Roach says she was with her cousin on Highway 42 near the Texaco when the man who was shot and killed approached them.
"He came up and he talked to us. Bummed a cigarette off of me," she said.
She says she also talked to Keith Davis, who lives in the nearby mobile home park.
"He was also friends with everybody."
Roach says it was right after she wrapped up talking to the two men when tragedy struck.
"And all of a sudden we heard nine gunshots," she said.
Clayton County police say those gunshots left a man dead Monday night on a wooded trail that leads to the Texaco on Highway 42 near Interstate 675.
Officers say the gunman also shot Davis and Sheldon Thomas. They survived.
Police are still working on a motive. A law enforcement source told Jones detectives are leaning towards robbery being the motive right now.
"It's just crazy you know," Cameron Haul said.
Haul works at the mobile home park and says the wooded trail is a popular cut-through for mobile park residents.
"So they don't have to walk around the long way to get to the gas station," he said.
It's a trail that some residents will be reluctant to use after this.
But Roach says she will no longer take that route.
Police are not releasing the name of the man who was killed until his next of kin are notified.
They also had no updates on the surviving victims' conditions.
