Mother: Verron Haynes was 'out of control, inappropriate'

ALPHARETTA, Ga. — An Alpharetta mother who said she witnessed former University of Georgia star Verron Haynes berating a youth football referee is also alleging Haynes was telling his son and other players to hurt their competition.

Alpharetta police told Channel 2's Mike Petchenik at this point they are only documenting what happened on the field Saturday, because nobody has stepped forward to press charges.

Still, the mother said something more should be done.

"It was out of control. Inappropriate, completely inappropriate," the mother said about the behavior she claims Haynes displayed during the youth football game between her son's team and Haynes' son's team.

"He ran out onto the field and started screaming at the referees. It took about four guys to get him off the field," said the mother, who asked Channel 2 Action News to conceal her identity.

She said it happened after the referee kicked Haynes' third-grade son out of the game for unsportsmanlike conduct against her son.

"(He) slammed his head on the ground, jumped on him and started punching him through his face mask and saying 'I hate you,' right in front of the referees," the mother said.

The mother told Petchenik she witnessed other dirty plays, and she claimed Haynes was instigating it from the sidelines.

"He was overheard saying 'punch them in the face, punch them in the head,'" the mother said.

After officials removed Haynes from the field, she said, another parent yelled at Haynes, and he berated her, too.

"He started yelling at her, profanities," the mother said. "You're a role model. When you're in the public eye, whether it's locally or nationally, you're a role model, and you need to uphold that standard, because you have an influence on children."

Petchenik made several attempts both Tuesday and Wednesday to reach Haynes for his side of the story, but he hasn't returned those calls.

Roswell announced Tuesday it has banned Haynes from coaching his son's team and from attending any of the games for the rest of the season.
