Mother prays son will walk again after brutal attack

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — A robbery victim is learning to walk again after being attacked and shot, leaving the man with questions about the attackers' motives.

The incident happened in a supermarket parking lot along Moreland Avenue in DeKalb County in January.  Laquan Taylor will always be haunted by why.

"Sometimes, I wonder, why so many shots?  That would be the only question I could ask them.  Why so many shots?" Taylor said.

It was a brutal crime that put Taylor in a wheelchair; Police say on January 14 in the lot of the Kroger store, two men pulled a gun and demanded Taylor's car.

He gave the robbers his keys and wallet without a fight.

"Next thing you know, I'm on the ground, asking for help. What was even more shocking to me was that while I was asking for help, people were passing me up, walking right by," Taylor said.

"There were many times they didn't think he was going to make it.  And as a parent, as a mother, it was really hard," Taylor's mother, Unetha Jones, said.

Jones says she prays her son, a Navy veteran who had just returned home to Georgia after working in Kuwait, will fully recover.

She also prays his attackers will pay for the crime.  Javon Ross, 17, and Victor Moore, 20, are charged with hijacking a motor vehicle and aggravated assault.

"One of the guys was out on bond when he committed this crime. I think there should be stiffer penalties about repeat offenders, especially guys with guns who do harm to people," Jones said.

Meantime, with his mother by his side, Taylor continues down a long path to recovery.  He is counting on him mom, his doctors and his faith.

"No matter what, God tells me what I'll be able to do. I believe in God that I will be able to walk," Taylor said.
