Mother of Atlanta man killed in Belize: 'I am just so devastated'

ATLANTA — The mother of an Atlanta man found dead in Belize says she’s devastated and angry about her son’s death.

Channel 2's Matt Johnson spoke with Drew DeVoursney's mother, Char DeVoursney, on Thursday and she said she believes several people were involved in her son's murder.

“I just can’t keep it off my mind,” she said.

DeVoursney and his girlfriend, Francesca Matus, were found dead in a sugar cane field with duct tape around their wrists on Tuesday.

“Finding out exactly what happened, something just pulled my heart out. I just felt so devastated by it,” Char DeVoursney said.

Authorities have ruled out robbery as a motive in the case. We’ve learned police found the couple with their belongings and valuables.

The couple both owned property in Belize, and authorities say nothing was taken from them. So they’re calling this an isolated incident.

“It couldn’t have been one person. Drew is such a strong, athletic fighter. He knew how to take care of someone if he had to. I’m sure,” Char DeVoursney said.

The Ministry of National Security in Belize says they don’t have any suspects, but several people have been detained.

Until arrests are made, Drew DeVoursney’s family says the questions they have are overwhelming.

“It’s a real strong anger feeling,” Char DeVoursney said. “Whoever it is and why?”

Drew DeVoursney lived in Belize since December, but was preparing to enroll in a trade school with his brother in Atlanta this week.
