Temple fights street name change for Mercedes Benz Headquarters

Officials at the Atlanta Georgia Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will formally oppose a plan to rename Barfield Road after the new Mercedes Benz North America Headquarters in Sandy Springs.

Church leaders say changing the address of their church to the name of a luxury automotive company is not in keeping with the teachings of the Mormon Church.

"It sounds wrong to me," said Atlanta Temple spokesperson Wendy Sharp. "Here on temple ground, where the humble and penitent come to worship God, it seems uncomfortable for us. It seems a conflict of our desires of what we want to say to the world and what we believe in."

Sharp told Channel 2's Tom Regan that Mercedes Benz makes some of the best cars in the world, but church don't wish to see the name on their stationary or wedding invitations.

A Mercedes Benz spokesperson said the not company does not believe the renaming would have an adverse impact or implication on church beliefs, but understands if the church feels it must voice its disagreement with the city.

The Atlanta Georgia Temple says it expects members to state their opposition to the proposed name change when the Sandy Springs City Council takes up the proposal March 7.
