Animals rescued from Cobb apartment fire

COBB COUNTY, Ga. — Cobb County firefighters say more than two dozen people were displaced by a fire at an apartment complex in Marietta.

Kathryn Banks says she was one of the first to notice the fire on Tuesday afternoon at the Lakefront Vista apartments on South Cobb Drive.

"My boss got out of the car and started banging on the doors and trying to break out the windows then I kicked into doors up there," Banks said.

The fire destroyed eight units and displaced more than 20 people.

Those who live in the units feared the worst.

"I just came from work and I saw them putting the fire out. That's it," Latoya Thompson.

Thompson broke down. Her dog was still inside.

Scott Ashby says his service cat was also left in the building when he suddenly had to evacuate.

"I had a heart attack back in January and he relieves my stress. Well, this ain't helping none," Ashby said.

As firefighters knocked down the fire, Thompson and Ashby got the news that that their pets were OK.

The Red Cross is helping residents displaced by the fire.
