Mom testifies against serial rape suspect

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — The mother of an accused serial rapist took the stand Thursday and testified she discovered her son's hidden pistol and called 911.

Gary Mincey is on trial for a series of rapes, sexual assaults and robberies that terrorized DeKalb County over a one-month period in 2011.  He is accused of attacking five women during that crime spree.

Patricia Mincey told jurors that a month after police searched her house, she was putting away some of her son's clothes in a chest of drawers when she noticed a secret hiding place inside it.  She said she found a gun, boxes of bullets and a bag full of jewelry.

"I found something in my house that I didn't put in there and shouldn't have been there," Mincey testified.

She told jurors she called 911 because she feared the gun being in the house with her other children.

DeKalb Police Officer Kenneth Monk showed jurors the silver-plated .380 semi-automatic pistol along with boxes of bullets, watches and other jewelry he says he took from Patricia Mincey.

Investigators also showed security camera video they said showed Mincey's SUV parked outside a South DeKalb grocery store on the night of one of the attacks.  Detective K.D. McNeil testified that the SUV followed home victim No. 4.  They also showed other items they said they recovered from the SUV after they arrested Mincey during a brief chase.

The prosecution is expected to wrap up its case Thursday afternoon.
