Man in serious condition after raft deflates in abandoned quarry

COBB COUNTY, Ga. — A 70-year-old man was rescued from an abandoned quarry after his inflatable raft began to sink Tuesday morning.

The Cobb County Fire Department was called to the rescue at the Castlelake Mobile Home Park on Cobb Parkway. The man was performing an environmental study in the abandoned quarry.

Channel 2's Ross Cavitt said the man's assistant saw the raft deflating and called for help. The man was in the water for about 45 minutes, but was wearing a wet suit. He was hypothermic and could only communicate by blinking his eyes, Cavitt said.

The man was rushed to the hospital in serious but stable condition.
