Accomplice charged with murder after deadly burglary

RIVERDALE, Ga. — A judge denied bail for a man charged with murder after a homeowner shot his alleged accomplice during an attempted burglary.

Officers were called to a home on Birch Walk Boulevard in Riverdale around 10:45 a.m. Tuesday and found John Dexter Williams, 19, suffering from a gunshot wound.

Police said Williams was trying to break into the house when he was caught by the homeowner.

Officers say the homeowner shot Williams as he entered through the back window of the home. Williams then ran to a nearby driveway, where he collapsed.

Williams was taken to the hospital in critical condition and later died.

Patrick Kemp, 22, who officers say was Williams’ partner in crime, ran away but was captured soon after.

Officers charged Kemp with felony murder since Williams died during the attempted burglary.

The homeowner isn’t facing charges.

Criminal warrants say Kemp and Williams coordinated their plan to break into the home.

"It says that you did knock on the front door of the location while the co-perpetrator John Williams did break through,” Judge Sonyja George said about Kemp's role in the robbery.

In court, Kemp frowned when he heard some of the allegations. At other times, he had a smirk on his face that didn’t sit well with neighbor Archie Booker, who found Williams wounded in his driveway after the shooting.

“He had that look on his face where he didn’t care,” Booker said about Kemp in court.

Booker was shaken by the incident and posted on his Facebook, “To my young black brothers, it’s not worth it. It’s not worth breaking into folks homes because people are not going to stand for that.”

Kemp’s mother was at the proceedings, but had no comment as she left court.
