Mail thief caught on camera at Atlanta apartment complex

ATLANTA — Police are looking for a mail thief who targeted a southwest Atlanta apartment complex.

Surveillance video from the Shamrock Gardens Apartments showed a man prying open the outgoing mail box and removing mail, then reading it on a nearby bench.

Cameras also show the man walking with packages from a parcel mailbox.

Resident Alicia Cuffee told Channel 2's Amy Napier Viteri she dropped off letters Sunday night but returned Monday morning to find the mailbox broken and empty.

"It's open like this and there's no mail," Cuffee said.

When she reported the missing mail, apartment staff found her items and mail belonging to other residents thrown in a trash can.

"I felt very violated. I was disappointed," Cuffee told Viteri. "Just has no common sense at all. Senseless. A predator."

Property owner Brent Sobol said he spent several thousand dollars installing a camera system at the complex two years ago for security reasons.

"We're just trying to figure out who he is and try to prevent him from doing this to someone else in the neighborhood."

Crimestoppers is offering a $3,000 reward for information in this case. Call 404-577-TIPS.
