Details emerge in deadly dealership robbery

GAINESVILLE, Ga. — Police in Gainesville now say they have a significant amount of evidence connecting 21-year-old Mark Taylor to the death of Charles Weaver.

Taylor sat among the crowd of accused offenders for his first appearance before a Hall County judge Monday morning.

An Atlanta police SWAT team arrested Taylor in southwest Atlanta Sunday.

Investigators believe he is the man who gunned down 42-year-old Weaver when he arrived at work Friday morning.

Police said Weaver was the first to arrive at Carriage Mitsubishi on Browns Bridge Road. A co-worker found his body later that morning.

"The officer states you did unlawfully and with malice aforethought caused the death of Charles Weaver by shooting him two times with a .45-caliber handgun," the judge told Taylor.

Investigators believe he then took off in a stolen pickup covered in dealer logos. A tipster spotted it after seeing it on a local newscast and called police.

Investigators would not comment on the specific evidence they had connecting Mark Taylor to the crime, but would only say it was "significant."

Channel 2's Kerry Kavanaugh requested the arrest warrants against Taylor. They indicated in addition to stealing the truck, Taylor stole Weaver's cellphone and his knife.

Investigators still aren't clear what motivated this crime. But, now a Hall County family is beginning their new year without their husband, father and grandfather.

Kavanaugh spoke briefly to Charles Weaver's stepson Monday. He said the family is still in shock and they are grieving and did not want to make a public statement.

The family of the suspect, Mark Taylor, was also at the courthouse. They declined to comment as well.
