Injury crash involving police cruiser shuts down Piedmont Road

ATLANTA — A wreck involving an Atlanta police cruiser shut down several lanes of Piedmont Road Monday morning.

The crash happened just before 6 a.m. on Piedmont Road near East Paces Ferry Road in northeast Atlanta.

Atlanta police dispatchers reported that the air bag in Officer P. Marshall's car deployed, and that she was trapped in the wreckage.

Rescue crews removed Marshall from the car and took her to Grady Memorial Hospital for treatment. The officer’s condition was not immediately available, but she appeared to be alert as she was loaded into an ambulance.

The woman driving the sedan that collided with the police cruiser, Yenenesh Gurmessa, was not seriously injured, and will be charged with failure to yield, according to police on the scene.

The southbound lanes of Piedmont Road were blocked for more than an hour, but reopened about 7:15 a.m.
