DUNWOODY, Ga. - There are growing concerns about the effects of the DeKalb County school troubles for the business community.

Many worry what the school board woes will means for real estate and economic growth in the Perimeter Mall area.

Channel 2's Rachel Stockman spoke with prospective home buyers on whether the troubles are affecting their decision to move to DeKalb County.

For Brian Hubbard and his wife, who are in the market for a new home, the quality of area schools is a central factor.

"We would like him to be in an accredited school," Hubbard told Stockman about his concerns for his child.

Hubbard said that will be something to weigh when picking where to live.

"We are thinking about schools right now, but we realize everything can change in the drop of the hat," Hubbard said.

"At the end of the day if you got to spend a lot of money to send your kids to private school because of the failing schools, then we'll locate somewhere else," Rep. Tom Taylor said.

It is too early to tell how the school being placed on probation by SACS will affect the real estate market, but Taylor is also worried about what the school district's problems mean for business development, especially in the area around Perimeter Mall, which has recently seen significant growth.

"The fear is, we have been attracting business in the past, but the fear is now with this probation on, can you attract it in the future - and you are either growing or dying," Taylor said

"It will effect business long term. Preparedness of students, to us being able to sustain the university culture, that then sustains the business culture," said Yvonne Williams, CEO of the Perimeter Community Improvement District.

Williams and many others hope with a new board taking over, it will steer the district back on track and off probation.
