High school cafeteria shut down after roaches found in food

The cafeteria of a Georgia high school has been quarantined after students found roaches in the food.

POLK COUNTY, Ga. —  The Polk County superintendent told Channel 2's Diana Davis cockroaches were found in meals at Cedartown High School. The bugs were found in peaches, cranberry sauce and even baked into a roll.

"I would not want our children certainly to eat in a cafeteria I wouldn't eat in, so we're taking every precaution," Superintendent Dr. William Hunter said.

Sophomores Kellsie Beckom and Hollie Staples took photos of the food and said they told the principal.

"I went to bite into the apples and there was a cockroach. I almost threw up. It was really nasty," Staples said.

"I just saw that everyone around me was flipping out," Beckom said.

Hunter said the school was sprayed for bugs twice last week.

"Last Tuesday our pest control people were here. They were here last Friday night and over the weekend," Hunter said.

To guarantee the health and safety of the kids, the school is bringing in prepackaged meals for the remainder of the school year.

The school said it will spray and do anything else needed to deal with bugs, not just in the next few weeks, but for as long as it takes over the summer.
