Chief: Mattress factory fire likely started by accident

EAST POINT, Ga. — Firefighters tell Channel 2 Action News that a fire at an East Point mattress factory is mostly contained.

The fire broke out at about 1 p.m. at the Classic Mattress factory at 1050 Oakleigh Road.

Fire investigators said they believe the fire was an accident that started outside the building.

"It started outside, in a trash pile, outside the company. The business makes mattresses, so there's lots of stuff that can burn out there," said East Point Fire Chief Rosemary Cloud.

As News Chopper 2 flew overhead, flames could be seen shooting out of the tops of several trailers at the company.
Investigators have not said how much damage has been done to the business.

No injuries have been reported, but firefighters said the heat made battling the flames especially challenging.

"We're rotating (the firefighters) out to what we call a rehab section so that they can get hydrated and checked to make sure that they're able to go on," Cloud said.

Cloud said they have several companies from around the area helping with the fire.

"We have all three stations on the scene extinguishing this fire. We also have had help from Hapeville and the City of College Park, and we have Fulton County standing by," Cloud said.

Cloud said crews will remain on scene most of the evening to make sure no hot spots flare up.
