Brush fire damages homes in Hall County

HALL COUNTY, Ga. — Firefighters are monitoring hot spots after a brush fire burned several homes in Hall County.

An overnight campfire along Lake Lanier sparked the 10-acre brush fire Saturday afternoon.

Investigators said high winds are to blame for spreading the flames.

The people who started the fire thought everything was fine.

"(They) looked at it, checked it this morning and it was smoldering, so they put some water and sand on it, but with the wind kicking up around noon it really grew very rapidly," Hall County Fire Capt. Zachary Brackett said.

Homes along Waterscape Ridge were damaged by the fire, with two homes facing up to $20,000 in damage.

No injuries have been reported.

Firefighters said it is important to check the forecast before starting a fire.

"Make sure you check the weather. Even if you're going to start a fire at night, you need to check the weather for the following day," Brackett said.

The fire department does not plan to pursue any charges at this time.
