GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. - Gwinnett County police said one of their officers shot and killed a robbery suspect during a home invasion on Monday morning.
A police spokesman said the suspect forced his way into an apartment where two children, ages 11 and 12, were home alone around 7:30 a.m. The children made it out of the home safely and contacted a neighbor who called police.
Police said the children were waiting to go to school and their mother had just left for work.
The suspect "presented a deadly force confrontation with the police officer, forcing the officer to respond with deadly force, shooting the suspect," said Cpl. Edwin Ritter.
The suspect was taken to Gwinnett Medical Center where he died. The officer was not injured.
Police could not tell Channel 2’s Carl Willis if the man was armed.
