Video shows dangerous police chase in rush hour traffic

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — A suspected car thief led police on a dangerous high speed chase during rush hour traffic, and now officers across the northern suburbs are looking for the driver.

A Duluth officer patrolled along Pleasant Hill Road, when his tag reader began warning of a nearby stolen car.

After a couple of minutes, the officer spotted the black Jeep with a New Jersey tag trying to blend in with traffic.

"At that point the subject knew the police were on him," Officer Ted Sadowski said.

Both the driver and officer narrowly missed cars at Peachtree Industrial, then again at Medlock Bridge.

Channel 2's Tony Thomas was there as the driver jumped into the wrong side of the road. Shrubs, street signs, and commuters were all obstacles until finally the suspect pulled away.

As police swarmed the area, Thomas found a Johns Creek canine heading into the woods, on the trail of the man officers believe waded through a creek before he cut through backyards.

Body camera video from another officer shows the officer finding the stolen car dumped in a cul-de-sac. The driver was long gone, but he did leave his phone behind.

"We also had some drones in the sky looking for the individual as well," Sadowski said.

Police told Thomas they do have a pretty good idea who he is, and believe it's just a matter of time.
