Police investigate woman shot in head on Gwinnett highway

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — Gwinnett County police have charged a man with shooting a woman in the head and pistol-whipping a man.

Channel 2's Tony Thomas obtained arrest warrants that outline the charges against Edward Samuel Dukes, 39, who is accused accused of pistol-whipping a man in a Gwinnett County apartment complex Tuesday morning, and then shooting a woman in the head after the man left.

“This incident appears to be domestic-related,” Cpl. Deon Washington, of the Gwinnett County Police Department, told Thomas.

Police say when they pulled over a dark SUV on Georgia 316 and Collins Hill Road Tuesday morning, they found a woman inside shot in the head.

Warrants identify the driver as Dukes. Authorities said Dukes shot Destiny Neal in the vehicle after pistol-whipping his roommate a couple of miles away.

Investigators said a neighbor at the Madison at River Sound apartments reported screaming just before 8 a.m. Tuesday. Police said they arrived to find a chaotic scene.

“During the dispute, the second man who lives at this location actually jumped off the balcony,” Washington told Thomas.

From two stories up, maintenance worker Robert Chiusano said the injured man, identified in warrants as Greg Kennedy, appeared fine as he spoke with police.

“He was just sitting on the ground,” Chiusano said.

Investigators filed two counts of aggravated assault charges against Dukes Tuesday afternoon.

Kennedy, the pistol-whipped roommate, is said to be fine. Neal was taken to a nearby hospital with critical injuries.

“We don't know why this fight took place and we don't know why the shooting happened,” Washington said.

Police also said they found quite a bit of drugs in that SUV when they pulled it over. Dukes faces three warrants for intent to distribute cocaine and two other drugs.
