Secretary of State: So far no problems with 2016 election

The polls opened smoothly across the state Tuesday morning, but the focus will soon shift once the polls close at 7 p.m.

ATLANTA — Channel 2 Action News got exclusive access to the state's election night war room Tuesday.

Secretary of State Brian Kemp, the state's top election official, will oversee his leadership team inside the war room alongside state investigators and IT specialists.

Kemp’s office has spent years and millions of dollars upgrading its systems and developing contingency plans to make sure each vote in Georgia’s 159 counties is cast, counted and transmitted back to the elections headquarters properly.

When the polls close, there are plans in place to deal with everything from power outages, to equipment malfunctions to hacker attacks.

In an exclusive interview, Kemp told Diamant the next few hours will be critical.

"Just getting those first results posted to make sure everything's working right. That's always a little bit of a tense time for us just to make sure that's going to work right, so we're preparing for that," Kemp said.
