75-year-old found dead inside burned home

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — A woman was found dead inside a home destroyed by fire in Gwinnett County.

Firefighters responded Wednesday afternoon to a home in the 1500 block of Brandon Square in Lawrenceville.

NewsChopper 2 flew over the scene on Channel 2 Action News at 4.

Firefighters tried to enter the home on the unburned side, but were forced out momentarily because of the intense fire conditions and collapsed roof.

Neighbors say the flames from a deadly house fire were so large, rescuers had a hard time getting inside.

“They tried to make entry into the home. They were not able to go in too far,” Gwinnett fire Capt. Tommy Rutledge said.

More than 40 firefighters worked for 30 minutes to put the fire out.

“The flames were so intense. We actually had to stand on the side. It was really bad,” neighbor Randy Simonette said.

Crews found an adult female's body inside the home.

Channel 2's Nefertiti Jaquez learned the victim was a 75-year-old woman who lived there with her husband.

Authorities have not yet released the victim’s name.

Fire officials believe the fire started in the formal living room, but are still investigating what caused it.

No one else was inside the home at the time and no other injuries have been reported.
