Man accused of scamming elderly victims with tree-trimming service

GWINETT COUNTY, Ga. — Police arrested a 22-year-old man accused of ripping off older people with a tree-trimming scam.

Investigators say Andrew Mosley, 22, of Flowery Branch, sweet talked 14 victims out of thousands of dollars.

“He’s a con man, oh yeah. He really knows how to lay on the charm,” Kathryn Welden said.

Welden said the man worked for just one day to trim trees around her Dacula home and asked for his payment long before the work was done.

“He said, ‘Can you pay us because my truck is in the shop,’ his mother just died. Oh, he gave me all these sad stories,” Welden said.

Welden handed over the full $2,800 and Mosley never returned.

Gwinnett County police said Welden is not the only person to fall for the scam.

Police believe Mosley has scammed people around Gwinnett County dating back to last summer.

He allegedly changes the name of his business to rack up more victims.

“We believe that he’s still out there changing the name of his business. All of the ones that he used are still fraudulent and he’s still doing this,” Gwinnett County police Cpl. Deon Washington told Channel 2's Justin Wilfon Wednesday.

These are the business names police say he’s used so far: B&M Tree Services, Mosley Tree Service and United Tree Service.

Police said in each case, Mosley completed little to no work and convinced people to hand over a total of $9,000.

Late Wednesday night, deputies arrested Mosley.

“Well I don’t feel so bad about being so stupid,” Welden said.

Wilfon tried to contact Mosley Wednesday, but did not get an answer.
