Police: Man shot girlfriend while toddler slept beside her

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — Police are looking for a man they said shot his girlfriend while the couple’s son was sleeping beside her.

It happened at a house on in the 400 block of Coalville Drive at about 3 a.m. Wednesday.

Lawrenceville police tell Channel 2’s Robert Ray that Anh Phuoc Bui, 40, left his girlfriend’s house at about 7:30 p.m. He returned at 3 a.m. and was intoxicated, according to police.

Police said the two got into an argument when Bui’s girlfriend asked him why he was drunk.

That’s when they said he took out a handgun and shot her in the femur. Police said the couple’s 3-year-old son was in the bed sleeping beside his mother when she was shot.

The woman is currently undergoing surgery.

Lawrenceville police have issued warrants for Bui’s arrest on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and cruelty to children.

Police said Bui is still on the loose and driving a 2010 Toyota Venza with a Texas tag BH2V536. The SUV belongs to Bui’s brother who lives in Texas, but police think Bui is still somewhere in Gwinnett County.

They said anyone with information about his whereabouts or who sees the SUV should call 911 immediately. Bui is considered armed and dangerous and should not be approached, according to police.

Bui is described as being Vietnamese, 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighing approximately 160 pounds.

Police said they think he has several locations where he stays in Gwinnett County.

"We don't have any reason to believe that he is going to Texas, but we have reason to believe that he is still in the Gwinnett County area," Lawrenceville police Det. Justin Hipps said.

The child is OK and was sleeping Wednesday afternoon after the shooting, police said.

Neighbors say they aren't used to this type of activity in their subdivision just off Johnson Road and Five Forks Trickum.

"I just hope everybody will be safe and he maybe he won't run back in here," neighbor Sara Wages said.
