Police search woods after human skull found

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — A search continued Wednesday after human remains were found in a wooded area in Gwinnett County.

A hunter found a skull Tuesday in the area near Bailey Road and Union Grove Circle near Auburn.

Investigators, recruits and crime scene technicians spent most of the day looking for more bones and other evidence.

“We are looking for evidence, additional bones and any property belonging to the skeletal remains,” Gwinnett police Cpl. Michele Pihera said.

Investigators found other parts of the remains.

“We’ve got the skull, which is very fortunate. We’ve got some pieces near the abdomen, maybe even a pelvis area. Those are the heavier bones,” Pihera said.

The medical examiner’s office believes the remains have been in the woods for at least two to three years and are a white male, possibly in his early 60s.

Residents wonder how the person died and was left in the woods.

“I’m not surprised. It’s not that it’s a bad area. It’s secluded,” Scott Clark said.

“I’m wondering what happened and who did it. You don’t see this every day,” Tony Viggins said.

Detectives are checking missing person’s reports to see if anything matches.

The medical examiner’s office will conduct a full autopsy with the bones that were found.
