Grandfather goes to check on grandson during break-in, gets shot in chest

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — Police are investigating the shooting of a man going to check on his grandson during a burglary in progress.

Gwinnett County police said it happened at a house in the 600 block of Long Circle in Lawrenceville at around 11 a.m. Friday.

According to police, a 14-year-old called his mother to tell her there was a silver car parked in their driveway and that someone was knocking on the door.

She told him she would call her father, who lived next door, to go check on him.

The teenager locked himself in his bedroom and then heard the front door break in.

He continued to hear voices and commotion as he heard burglars ransacking his parents’ bedroom, police said.

One of the burglars tried to get into the boy’s room, but was not able to. Moments later, the teen heard his grandfather arrive and call out to him.

That’s when he told police he heard a single gunshot. His grandfather had been shot in the chest and he called out to his grandson to call 911. Before paramedics arrived, a Gwinnett County sheriff’s deputy put a chest seal on the injured grandfather while police helped him.

He was taken to Gwinnett Medical Center in Lawrenceville. He is in critical condition but stable, police said.

The teen was not hurt.

Police said they are looking for three male suspects and a silver car.
