Community honors memory of women killed in Athens crash

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga — A Gwinnett County community came together to remember two college students. The young women were killed in a crash near the University of Georgia.

Crowds filled both bleachers at South Gwinnett High School for an emotional farewell to two beloved young women. The two are being remembered as fun loving and down to earth.

Olivia Cox, 22, and her best friend Megan Smith, 23, died last month in a car crash. Both women were passengers in a black sedan when the driver lost control and struck another vehicle in Athens.

"I believe that Megan and Olivia not only made a change in the world during their lives, but that they should also be making a change in our lives after they're gone," Cox's mother Dana Turk said.

Saturday night's memorial was an emotional farewell for two promising lives cut short.

Friends wrote tributes on the balloons that each person released into the sky.

The large crowd stood on the same field where Cox played softball for the school.
