Clayton County sheriff indicted in shooting of friend

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — A grand jury has indicted Clayton County Sheriff Victor Hill in the accidental shooting of a friend.

Hill was indicted on one count of misdemeanor reckless conduct.

The indictment came after Hill gave the grand jury a demonstration using a blue training gun, trying to explain what happened when his good friend was shot.

Hill left the grand jury room in dark sunglasses and appeared to be on the phone.

Hill is accused of shooting real estate agent and friend Gwenevre McCord last May inside a Lawrenceville area model home.

McCord has since recovered. Hill said they were practicing police tactics when she was accidentally shot.

"He was neither arrogant, nor nervous. Just like every other witness I've ever seen," Gwinnett County District Attorney Danny Porter told Channel 2's Tony Thomas after the indictment was handed down.

Grand juries are normally closed affairs with only prosecutors and their witnesses presenting evidence, but Georgia law allows law enforcement officers who face charges to sit in and listen, then give a statement.

"He gave a demonstration using his attorney as a model," Porter told Thomas.

Porter said McCord, who also says the whole thing was an accident, provided a written statement.

Porter said Hill answered seven or eight questions from the jury before leaving to wait and learn his fate.
