ATLANTA — A Georgia Tech student has launched an online fundraising effort to aid campus police officers affected by Monday night's riots.
What began as a peaceful vigil in memory of fellow student Scout Schultz devolved into mayhem and a police cruiser was set ablaze.
“Two GTPD officers were injured in the ensuing melees and two GTPD cruisers were torched,” wrote Phillip Yamin, an electrical engineering major in the class of 2019, who started the online effort.
It’s so far raised more than $6,500.

Channel 2's Steve Gehlbach was on the campus Tuesday morning, where he saw students writing supportive messages and thanks to the officers.
Many students started posting online, deciding to wear Georgia Tech gear Tuesday showing they're one community.
"Really started out as venting our feelings and whatnot, then like hey, we can use this as opportunity to make something good on the campus,” said student Sam Costley.
Students have also set up a Facebook page where students are signing up to volunteer their time.
