GBI investigating Clayton Co. police-involved shooting

CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. — One person is in custody and two others are on the run following a car crash and officer-involved shooting in Clayton County.

Clayton County police said one of their officers opened fire on a group of carjacking suspects Sunday about 11 p.m.

Channel 2's Darryn Moore was the first reporter on the scene. Clayton County police Sgt. Kevin Hughes said they ran from a stolen Volkswagen sedan after crashing into a pickup truck parked on Brookstone Road while trying to get away. Police said three men ran from the car. One of them pulled out a gun on the officer, and that's when the shots were fired.

"At some point during the foot pursuit, the male turned, produced a firearm, pointed it at the officer. The officer fired, striking the subject once," Hughes said.

Police said two of the suspects kicked in the fence of a neighbor's back yard.

The police chopper tried to search for the suspects but they got away. Jones said the whole situation scared his kids.

"I (saw) a couple gunshots fired and I just told my kids to get down on the floor," said Gerald Jones.

Police have no description of the two men who got away. The person shot by the officer is expected to recover. The GBI is investigating the case.
