PAULDING COUNTY, Ga. - The GBI is investigating a deadly officer-involved shooting in Paulding County.

Deputies say it began just after 10:30 a.m. Friday as a domestic situation on Mt. Vernon Church Road.

DFCS and the Crimes Against Children Unit were called in to assist because there was a child at the home.

After being on the scene for most of the day, DFCS and police decided the child needed to be removed from the home.

After that decision was made around 3:15 p.m., police say the child's father, identified as 39-year-old William Tarrant, pulled a gun from the small of his back and pointed it at deputies. Deputies fired at the man, killing him.

"So we're trying to figure it all out as well," Sgt. Ashley Henson said with the Paulding County Sheriff's Office. "We just know if was obviously a bad situation that this individual felt it was a bad situation he felt he couldn't come back from."

No one else was injured. Deputies could not say where the child was at the time of the shooting.

The child is now in state custody.
