Woman to sue after plans for Hindu temple rejected

FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — A woman who lost her fight to build a Hindu temple.is planning to sue for religious discrimination.

Forsyth County commissioners rejected plans for the temple in the Shady Shores neighborhood.

Forsyth County Commissioners voted 5-0 to deny a proposal for a Hindu temple and priest residence in the Lake Lanier-area neighborhood of Shady Shores.

Property owner Dr. Sumantha Satoor applied last summer for a permit to build an 11,200-square foot temple and priest's residence on 8 acres she owns on Pilgrim Point Road. Plans call for 109 parking spaces.

Hundreds of residents have since turned out at various hearings to object to the plans.

Commissioners said the temple is wrong for the area.

Satoor is going to federal court.

"Our claim in the lawsuit is that we should be considered equal to any other religious facility, like a church, like a mosque, like a synagogue,” Satoor said.

One commissioner said he would have voted against any house of worship on the site.
