Former Spalding County sheriff's captain arrested by GBI

SPALDING COUNTY, Ga. — A former sheriff's captain was arrested on a slew of charges regarding alleged misconduct and assault of sheriff's office employees.
According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, David Wayne Gibson, 51, a former captain in the Spalding County Sheriff's Office Uniform Patrol Division, was arrested Thursday at about 10 a.m.

The GBI said Gibson was arrested on charges of aggravated assault, aggravated sexual battery, influencing witnesses, stalking, public indecency, sexual battery, simple battery, and violation of oath of office.

According to the GBI, Spalding County District Attorney Scott Ballard requested the GBI's investigation after his office reeived an internal affairs report alleging Gibson had assaulted employees of the sheriff's office.

Additional victims who were not a part of the original inquiry also reported allegations, misconduct and criminal activity by Gibson, the GBI said.

The GBI said the investigation is ongoing and will be turned over to the DA's office when completed.
