FLOYD COUNTY, Ga. — Police say a former Board of Education supervisor and more than a dozen others stole $3 million from the district, and no one knew it was happening.
Channel 2’s Dave Huddleston obtained a 37-page court document that says from 2005 to 2015, Floyd County BOE’s maintenance bought a $375,000 home and dozens of other lavish items with stolen money.
The report says it was all from inflated and false invoices by the hundreds of thousands of dollars.
“(That’s) a lot of money our kids could be benefiting from or other things that can go to a good purpose like they're supposed to,” said parent Sarina Bannister.
Documents reveal the supervisor furnished his house with high-end appliances and was in the process of building a pool house all from the invoices.
The civil complaint says the supervisor's wife, “Opened credit cards and spent tens of thousands on trips to New York staying in $1,000-per-night hotels, vacations to Disney World, (and) even (bought) 33 acres of lakefront property.”
Police Chief Bill Shiflet told Huddleston this case is by far the biggest in his 40-year history.
“The law applies to everyone no matter what position or role you had,” Bannister said.
Investigators told Huddleston they will arrest about a dozen people in coming days.
“I pray that everything works out for the benefit of our children's sake,” said educator Shirley Woody.
The former supervisor is not being named because he has not been charged with a crime yet. The assistant superintendent said they are trying to figure out how this went on for so long without anyone noticing.
